How to Apply for Financial Aid

Find out how to apply for financial aid at UMGC Asia.

Applying for financial aid doesn't need to be stressful—all the forms you need to apply for admission and financial aid to UMGC are easily available online. Here's how to navigate the financial aid process effectively.

  1. Apply for admission to UMGC.

If you haven't already been admitted as a student, learn how to get started with the online application.

  2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA.

    UMGC school code: 011644

*With the passage of the FAFSA Simplification ACT, there will be several changes starting for the 2024-2025 aid year. Visit Federal Student Aid Changes 2024-2025 for the latest information and updates.

  3. Apply early!

For priority consideration, your FAFSA must be received by the established priority deadlines: June 1 (for fall), November 1 (for spring), and April 1 (for summer). While no award for financial aid can be given until you have been admitted to UMGC, please do not wait until your admission decision has been received to submit your FAFSA.

If you're a Maryland resident, you must apply by March 1 to be considered for student financial aid from the Maryland Higher Education Commission for the academic year starting that fall. Make sure to include UMGC's school code (011644) on your FAFSA. For more information about Maryland state aid, please visit MHEC.

  4. Verify your financial aid status in MyUMGC.

The status of your financial aid application will be available online at MyUMGC, the online home of your student account. Once you have been admitted as a student to UMGC and the Financial Aid Office has received your FAFSA, you will be provided with a user ID and password for logging onto MyUMGC. Click on "View My Financial Aid" to access your financial aid and student account information.

  5. Keep all your personal information current.

If you move, go to your MyUMGC account and submit an "address change." Also log on to keep your legal name and telephone numbers current.

You're Accepted: Now What?

Upon acceptance to UMGC, you should receive a financial aid award letter from UMGC's Financial Aid Office outlining the aid you qualify for.

UMGC will estimate your cost of attendance and provide you with a projection of your educational costs, including such fixed costs as tuition and fees and such variable costs as books, transportation, computers, loan fees, and personal expenses.

Your award may be a combination of scholarshipsgrants, and loans. Your award is based on your FAFSA results and on the assumption that you will register at least half-time. The aid awarded is divided equally between the fall and spring terms.

Steps to Ensure You Receive your Aid on Time

  1. Accept your aid package

It is important to accept your award promptly, so that your aid will disburse in a timely manner. If you decide not to attend UMGC, please contact our office immediately.

Initial awards are based on the assumption that you will be enrolled half-time. Awards may be adjusted if you enroll for more or fewer credits.

  2. Check your MyUMGC account.

In order to ensure your financial aid is disbursed on time, it is important to check your MyUMGC account periodically to make sure that you have completed any missing or incomplete items and that your financial aid file is complete.

Your Pell Grant will be revised according to your actual enrollment after your classes begin. If you are owed a refund, it will be mailed to you from the State of Maryland Office of the Comptroller within seven to 14 business days following disbursement of aid to your student account.

  3. Complete Direct Loan Entrance Counseling.

If you are a new borrower to UMGC, visit studentaid.gov to complete your Direct Loan Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note. Both of these documents must be completed before your loan funds will be disbursed.

  4. Enroll in classes.

Use your financial aid to help pay for classes you want to take to get your UMGC education program started. Pick your start date and learn how to register online or on-site at many UMGC locations.

  5. Maintain your eligibility.

To maintain your eligibility to be considered for financial aid, you must meet the standards set forth in UMGC's financial aid policy on Satisfactory Academic Progress. Read the undergraduate academic progress policy and the graduate academic progress policy.
