Course Withdrawal Refunds

Learn how course withdrawals impact your financial aid and refunds at UMGC Asia.

Dropping or Withdrawing from a Course

An academic drop occurs when you remove yourself from a course before or during UMGC's drop period. There are no academic consequences for this action, but there may be financial aid repercussions for this drop if you no longer meet aid qualifications. The course will show on your registration history as dropped but will not post on any unofficial or official transcripts and does not count as attempted credit.

An academic withdrawal from a course occurs when you remove yourself from a course after the drop period has passed. There will be financial repercussions for this withdrawal based on the refund schedule.

The academic consequences for this action include receiving the grade of "W" for the course, which will appear on any unofficial or official transcripts. A grade of "W" will not impact your GPA but does not count as completed credit toward your degree.

How to Withdraw

Students who must withdraw (drop) from a course are responsible for completing the withdrawal (drop) through MyUMGC or by contacting UMGC Asia in writing to request the withdraw. The date a student withdraws in MyUMGC will determine the withdrawal date for refunds. Students who officially withdraw from a course after the schedule adjustment period will receive a mark of W.

Tuition Assistance: Students using tuition assistance must contact the center that issued the tuition assistance to discuss the reasons for withdrawing from the class and possible repayment of funds.

The following actions do not constitute formally withdrawing (dropping) from a course and may result in a failing grade and forfeit of any refund:

  • Stopping payment on checks or registration fees
  • Non-payment of tuition charges
  • Never attending or ceasing to attend class(es)
  • Verbally requesting to withdraw from class(es)

When to Withdraw

The following withdrawal schedule applies to UMGC Asia students:

  • On-site classes and weekend seminars: before the final day of the course
  • Hybrid classes: no later than nine days prior to the last day of class
  • Online classes: before 65% of the total days of a class

Students receiving financial aid are strongly encouraged to contact the Financial Aid Office before withdrawing to fully understand the impact on their current and future financial aid. Students are responsible for withdrawing themselves from courses.

Students seeking an exception to the withdrawal policy due to extenuating circumstances may complete the Request for Exception to UMGC Withdrawal and/or Refund Policy form to have their request considered.

Military Students Using Tuition Assistance

If you are using TA and withdraw from a class prior to completing 60 percent of the class, you may be required to pay a portion of the tuition, due to Department of Defense regulations. Learn more about return of tuition assistance. Contact your service branch for more information.

Note: All Active Duty Service Members (including Guard and Reserve) must contact their Education Service Officer (ESO) or Education Counselor within your branch of service prior to enrolling in any college or university. To receive the reduced military tuition rate, you must submit documentation to verify your eligibility in accordance with the procedures for receiving the military tuition rate within 30 days after applying for admission to UMGC. If you do not submit sufficient documentation within the deadline, your tuition rate will be changed to the appropriate rate.
