Develop your English language skills with UMGC's ESL Program.

The ESL Program offers non-credit courses to English language learners focusing on the development of their speaking, writing, reading, and listening literacy skills. Students will receive a Certificate of Achievement at the end of each class.

Courses are offered over a four-week period and meet for 2-3 hours, twice per week. Students will receive a total of 20 hours of classroom instruction per course.

Program Requirements

Students interested in the ESL Program must possess their own base access. UMGC cannot provide base passes to students participating in the ESL Program.

How to Enroll

Interested in taking ESL classes? Please contact your local UMGC representative for registration information or email specialprograms-asia@umgc.edu. Registration must be completed prior to the first class meeting.

Course Cost

Each course is $150. Tuition includes a textbook* for the duration of the course.

* UMGC will collect the textbooks on the last day of class.

Course Descriptions

  • ESL 1101: Beginning ESL

    This is a basic conversational English course targeting listening, reading, speaking, and some writing in English. Topics include social situations such as greetings, body language, cultural differences, and asking questions both formally and informally.

  • ESL 1102: Intermediate ESL

    This is a basic academic English course targeting listening, reading, speaking, and some writing that can be utilized in class discussions. Topics include nationalities, occupations, diet and health, sports and leisure, weather, and technology.

  • ESL 1103: Advanced ESL

    In this course, students will be developing their English skills to be utilized in professional environments including business dialogue in speaking and writing. Topics and vocabulary introduced will cover various workplace situations such as telephone etiquette, describing upbringing, office terminology, modern transportation, expressions for emergencies, giving/asking for directions and others.

  • ESL 1201: Business and Professional Communications

    This is a basic business and professional English course targeting listening, reading, speaking, and writing in a professional business setting. Topics and vocabulary include various workplace situations such as banking and money transactions, office terminology, modern transportation, expressions for emergencies, education, and others.

  • ESL 1202: Business & Professional Communications II

    In this course, students will develop their English skills to be utilized in professional environments, including business dialogue and business writing. Topics and vocabulary introduced will cover various business situations such as making appointments and suggestions, hotel customer service, giving advice and describing locations.

  • ESL 1203: Business & Professional Communications III

    In this course, students will develop their English skills to be utilized in professional environments, including business dialogue and business writing. Topics and vocabulary introduced will cover various business situations such as: entertaining in the business world, balancing work and leisure, and future workplaces.

    • Gain a broad understanding of the four sections of the TOEFL® test: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing
    • Acquire helpful tips to prepare you for the TOEFL® test
    • Register and take the TOEFL® with UMGC
  • ESL 2101: ESL Reading, Synthesizing & University Communications 1

    In this course, we will learn how to read academic texts more quickly and effectively. We will practice summarizing information from written texts. In addition, we will explore writing well-structured paragraphs.

  • ESL 2102: ESL Reading, Synthesizing & University Communications 2

    In this course, we will learn skills and techniques to read academic texts more quickly and effectively. We will practice conveying information from various texts in written or spoken summaries. In addition, we will focus on writing clear paragraphs and appropriate emails.

  • ESL 2103: ESL Reading, Synthesizing & University Communications 3

    In this course, we will build on reading skills and apply new methods to read academic texts more quickly and effectively. We will practice synthesizing information from multiple texts. In addition, we will explore writing appropriate emails, reports, paragraphs, and short texts.

  • ESL 2104: ESL Reading, Synthesizing & University Communications 4

    In this course, we will apply higher-level skills and techniques to read academic texts more quickly and effectively. We will regularly synthesize information from multiple texts into written or spoken summaries. In addition, we will apply a variety of techniques for writing appropriate emails, reports, paragraphs, and short texts.

*For all ESL 2101~2104 courses, you should expect to spend 2 to 4 hours per week on homework to get the most out of the course. The courses include lectures, class discussions, presentations, written reports, and other types of communication. ESL instructors and staff will moderate the discussions and provide feedback where possible during classes.

  • ESL 2201: ESL Listening, Speaking & University Communications 1

    In this course, we will learn new techniques that facilitate the development of listening skills and begin to apply these techniques to better understand academic and real-world listening (and videos). You will regularly discuss a variety of academic topics related to listening texts and independently present to the class. In addition, we will regularly practice independent listening and note-taking skills.

  • ESL 2202: ESL Listening, Speaking & University Communications 2

    In this course, we will review new techniques that facilitate the development of listening skills and apply these techniques to better understand academic and real-world listening (and videos). You will regularly participate in academic and non-academic discussions on a variety of topics and present as a part of a group to the class. In addition, we will regularly practice independent listening and note-taking skills.

  • ESL 2203: ESL Listening, Speaking & University Communications 3

    In this course, we will develop listening skills and practice techniques to better understand academic and real-world listening (and videos). We will regularly lead and participate in discussions and deliver presentations. In addition, we will regularly practice independent listening and note-taking skills.

  • ESL 2204: ESL Listening, Speaking & University Communications 4

    In this course, we will deepen our listening skills and apply techniques to better understand academic and real-world listening (and videos). We will regularly lead and participate in discussions and a debate. In addition, we will regularly practice independent listening and note-taking skills.

*For all ESL 2201~2204 courses, you should expect to spend 2 to 4 hours per week on homework to get the most out of the course. ESL instructors and staff will moderate the discussions and provide feedback where possible during classes.

  • ESL 2301: ESL Advanced Business Writing and Communications

    In this course, we will build on general and academic writing skills developed in previous courses and apply new techniques and strategies to create effective business communications (emails, reports). We will also practice oral communication skills for small talk and meetings. You should expect to spend 2 to 4 hours per week on homework to get the most out of this course. The course includes lectures, class discussions, written reports, and other types of communication. ESL instructors and staff will moderate the discussions and provide feedback where possible during classes.
