Chapter 33T: Transfer of Post-9/11 GI Bill® Benefits to Dependents

Your monthly benefits are paid directly to UMGC and are based on your rate of pursuit and length of service percentage . You receive a book allowance and may also be eligible for a housing allowance based on your length of service percentage but only after separation. Children of military servicemembers may receive the monthly housing allowance while the servicemember is on active duty, but spouses may not.

Tuition Assistance for Military Personnel

UMGC keeps its undergraduate and graduate tuition rates affordable, so your military benefits can go further.

We offer a special undergraduate military rate for active-duty military servicemembers and members of the National Guard and Reserves, so Tuition Assistance can cover up to 100 percent of tuition.

And if you're a graduate student and active duty, you could also qualify for reduced tuition rates for most programs. Plus, we've outlined a straightforward process for you to get started on your education whether you're in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, National Guard, Navy, or Reserves.

Note: All Active Duty Service Members (including Guard and Reserve) must contact their Education Service Officer (ESO) or Education Counselor within your branch of service prior to enrolling in any college or university. To receive the reduced military tuition rate, you must submit documentation to verify your eligibility in accordance with the procedures for receiving the military tuition rate within 30 days after applying for admission to UMGC. If you do not submit sufficient documentation within the deadline, your tuition rate will be changed to the appropriate rate.

Each branch of the military handles TA somewhat differently. If you're in the Air Force, you'll need to register through UMGC and then apply for TA through the Air Force Virtual Education Center.

If you are in the Coast Guard, Navy, or Marine Corps, you will go to your Education Center in person, fill out the form, have it signed by your education coordinator, and send it to UMGC’s Office of Student Accounts by fax to 301-985-7858 or e-mail to studentaccounts@umgc.edu.

Please note that if you are using TA and withdraw from a class prior to completing 60 percent of the class, you may be required to pay a portion of the tuition, due to Department of Defense regulations regarding return of tuition assistance. Contact your service branch for more information.

You may be able to use your veterans education benefits to help pay for your education at UMGC if you are not receiving Tuition Assistance or if your TA does not pay the full cost of your tuition.
